Gameplay isn't everything - it's about the complete experience. Because Infinite World didn't take a particularly huge leap from Budokai 3 and came out so late in the PS2's life cycle, it's not hard to see why people might really dislike it. Infinite World doesn't even have a tournament mode which is literally a staple of the franchise.īudokai 3 feels like a true sequel to Budokai 2 whereas Infinite World feels more like Budokai 3.5. The story mode feels more complete and encourages you to spend some time to just mess around and find stuff. It was a HUGE leap from Budokai 2 in every single way imaginable. However, Budokai 3 is more of a complete experience. You also don't need to be in hyper mode to use ultimates, which were a dumb requirement in Budokai 3. The capsule system was also vastly improved since you only need 1 capsule to transform and every character ended up getting multiple super moves - whereas in Budokai 3 only a few characters had that luxury. It removed the WORST parts about Budokai 3 - like the notoriously bad Dragon Rush mechanic. If all you care about is the fighting and gameplay, Infinite World is the best Budokai game. In terms of gameplay alone, Infinite World is just objectively better than Budokai 3.

The assets, models and backdrops all look rough around the edges. Infinite World was a very late release in the console lifespan, releasing exclusively on PS2 in 2008, 2 years after the launch of the PS3 and just a few months after Burst Limit on that and the Xbox 360. In terms of the overall look, this game looks basic. Then moving onto the presentation of the title. You can’t launch into the air with careless abandon, for example, a staple of the DB fighting game experience. Plus, the scale feels limited compared to other games.

However, despite this, the combat feels repetitive, without the same action-packed flair that other games in the series have in abundance. You have access to Ki blasts, punches kicks and a range of other powers. The combat for this game is just downright dull.

Something that this game seems to forget was essential. However, all these modes depend on fun and fluid battle mechanics. You’ll have access to training, you’ll have an arcade mode and you’ll have your unlockables to gather throughout the run. There is still an AI and local multiplayer fighting mode. The player will still be able to enjoy the highlights from the show’s run through a story mode. The thing that will come as a comfort to players who love games within the DB series is that this game maintains some of the usual modes.
